ocr: The Turks are racially diverse. Many are refugees or the descendants ofrefugees, often from the Ballcans or other territories once under Russian rule. However, the sense ofnationalidentity is strong,rootedin a shared language and religion - the majority is Sunni Muslim, though there is a tast-growing Shi'a community in central Anatolia. The largest minority 2.5 million - are the Kurds while some 500,000 people, mainly in the southeast, are Arabic speakers. Women have equal rights and Turkey's first woman prime minister came to power in 1993.
